Duane Thomas Gallery is delighted to announce its Summer group exhibition titled “Docile Bodies,” drawing inspiration from Michel Foucault’s seminal chapter in “Discipline and Punish.” The exhibition explores Foucault’s theory that power structures mold bodies.
The artworks featured in this exhibition, created for the most part during the 1960s and 1970s by Rita Myers, Eunice Golden, and Shirley Pettibone, directly confront issues surrounding women’s bodies, the female gaze, and their potential for agency and autonomy. These works critically examine societal norms and constraints. Additionally, the exhibition includes pieces that challenge traditional notions of bodies, exploring them as non-binary and non-linear entities.
